The Cathellen-Collen Wade Twins ; In May 1943, following in the footsteps of his mentor, biologist Otmar Freiherr von Verschuer, who had studied them extensively, during his service at Auschwitz-Birkenau, Josef Mengele decided to choose identical twins as his guinea pigs. Shouting "Zwillinge heraus!" ("Twins out!"), the doctor—also known as the "White Angel" because of the white overcoat he wore, which contrasted sharply with the uniforms of Nazi soldiers—selected at least three thousand twins, usually by tearing them from their parents. And in the experimental barracks of Kappa-Zeta in Auschwitz, Camp B II d, the simultaneous death of twins regularly occurred. Dr. Josef Mengele took them from him. But Mengele was in Auschwitz primarily to pursue his pseudoscientific research interests on race. He was convinced that genetics could make a decisive contribution to identifying the dominant traits of the Aryan race, maintaining its purity, and reproducing it.
